The World Health Organisation (WHO) now recognises acupuncture as a complimentary treatment for 104 conditions, one of those conditions being depression.
It is important to understand that according to researchers, low levels of serotonin in individuals can make an individual prone to addiction, depression, crime, etc. The reason for some individuals having lower levels of serotonin has not yet been determined. These same researchers hypothesised that it could be genetically related, but the environment, in the form of a physical or emotional trauma could possibly trigger it.
Many believe that the reason stimulation of acupuncture points helps to relieve depression is because it encourages the release and synthesis of serotonin. In general, “increased levels of serotonin and endorphins are consistent with emotional well-being”.
After reading through many studies it seems that several scientists are willing to acknowledge the use of acupuncture as a treatment for depression. Many studies even report that acupuncture is as effective in treating depression as antidepressants. According to researchers, traditional treatments for depression, such as psychotherapy and pharmacology, work for roughly 50% of the patients who finish the treatment. There are many patients however, who do not finish these treatment because of unbearable side effects or disillusionment with their medication or psychotherapy treatments.
More research definitely needs to be done to better understand the effect of acupuncture or laser therapy on depression, but it looks like it can develop into a very promising way of relieving depressive disorders.
Laser therapy may not work for all patients, but it is definitely worth trying, since it is painless, inexpensive and free of side effects.
